‘Tourism’s Horizon: Travel for the Millions’, the book

In 2025, Tourism’s Horizon: Travel for the Millions, the Substack blog and “Good Tourism” Insight Partner, published a book of the same name compiled by its founder Dr Jim Butcher.

The book is divided into two parts: a collection of in-depth interviews with leading scholars reflecting on the evolution and future of tourism; and a series of thought-provoking essays drawn from the TH:TM Substack and The “Good Tourism” Blog.

Archived below are the “GT” Insights that were adapted for the Tourism’s Horizon: Travel for the Millions book, and the TH:TM interview summaries and reflections published as “GT” Insights. Enjoy this collection and know that there is so much more content in the TH:TM book, which is available in print and electronic formats.

For all its diverse ontologies and epistemologies, tourism academia and research have not influenced industry practice as much as it could have, according to Soile Veijola. That puts her hopes of an ‘ethical turn’ in tourism at risk and has her worried about the future of the phenomenon. It’s a “Good Tourism” Insight.

There is much to fear about the future of travel, according to Michael Hall, including the risks that attend its growth, and the rise of intolerance. Professor Richard Butler on tourism’s challenges and academia’s inadequacies ... "[Don't] let wishful thinking take precedence over logic"

As most travel & tourism stakeholders rush towards an uncertain future filled with very real challenges, Richard Butler worries that academia is losing itself down ideological alleyways and critical cul-de-sacs. November 13, 2023

Prof Greg Richards took part in the Tourism's Horizon Interviews and spoke about academic silos, localism, overtourism, and modernity

Greg Richards thinks more of us should lift our gaze from our narrow academic, business, and local concerns. We should scan the horizons of what we (think we) know, and try harder to understand the primordial instinct we have to travel and the human incentives that drive the tourism industry.  Professor Richards is the subject […]

What is ‘mass tourism’? And what’s the problem?

October 17, 2023

What is 'mass tourism'? Is it "human pollution" as this graffiti asserts? Image by Mark de Jong (CC0) via Unsplash. https://unsplash.com/photos/FZ8ZEeL0l8g

What is ‘mass tourism’? How do we think about it and talk about it? Do we consider all of its contexts, costs, and benefits? Does mass tourism contribute to good lives? Or do ‘the masses’ only represent threat? Does leisure travel for the many have its place in a ‘green’ future for us all? Or […]

It is generally considered healthy to socialise with others and to exercise outdoors; activities that some jurisdictions deemed problematic during pandemic lockdowns.  Combining those activities is parkrunning.  Hannah Dalton investigates the potential of parkrun and parkrun tourism to (re)build social capital both at home and away.
