Geoffrey Lipman is a former top official and innovator at the International Air Transport Association (IATA), World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), and United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

In his current roles as chief disruption architect and professor at GreenEarth.travel, and co-founder of the SUNx Program, Prof Lipman advocates concepts such as “green growth”, “impact-travel”, and “travelism”, and asserts that climate change is “existential”.

Prof Lipman’s firm belief that climate change has the potential to knock out our species has not only inspired him to add the “x” to SUNx, but is also driving him to pursue the most ambitious project of his career; the realisation of a Strong Universal Network (SUNx) that will empower and resource current and emerging generations who must face the existential threat head on.

‘Climate Justice’ in tourism shouldn’t be too hard and it’s the right thing to do

There is increasing chatter on social media about the need for ‘Climate Justice’. At its core, Climate Justice is ensuring a very strong measure of protection for those who did the least to create the ‘Code Red Climate Crisis’, and who are likely to be the most to suffer from climate change, and who are […]

No apologies: ‘eXistential’ climate change and peak GHG emissions 2025 are not advocacy issues. Travel & tourism must act now!

No apologies: ‘Existential’ climate change and peak GHG emissions 2025 are not advocacy issues. Travel & tourism must act now!

We at SUNx Malta make no apologies for pushing the existential imperative of achieving peak GHG emissions by 2025. We are reaching out to the leadership of the travel & tourism sector to act on the latest IPCC report calling for three clear targets to stabilise global temperatures at Paris 1.5°C by mid-century …

Mikhail Gorbachev died on August 30th, 2022. The former President of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) is best remembered as the man who engineered the peaceful transformation of the USSR and the opening of the Berlin Wall. Less known is the fact that during his incredible life he collaborated closely with Maurice Strong. Together they […]

Back to the future: A sustainability plan for our kids

Back to the future: A sustainability plan for our kids was led and then inspired by Maurice Strong whose legacy continues through the SUNx Strong Universal Network

On the 50th Anniversary of the Stockholm Earth Summit, and the 30th Anniversary of the Rio Earth Summit — both of which were led by my friend Maurice Strong, the inspiration for SUNx Malta (Strong Universal Network) — I gave a keynote at a Stockholm event reflecting on the dominant role Maurice played in creating today’s United Nations-led climate […]

Hello 2022 and Code Red, Climate Friendly Travel

Goodbye 2021 Despite the permanent drama of an intensifying pandemic, 2021 also underscored the magnitude of our creeping, existential global climate crisis.  Weather extremes decimated communities on all continents: Crazy floods in Europe and Canada; Massive forest fires in the US and Australia; Droughts in Africa; Typhoons in the Pacific and the Atlantic; and growing […]

Climate Friendly Travel; SUNx' Code Red Plan for our Kids

At SUNx Malta we have a clear view of the path forward for our sector to respond to the “code red” climate crisis identified by UN Secretary General António Guterres. It’s more ambitious than the heavily marketed Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism, specifically in terms of earlier delivery dates, coverage of all greenhouse […]
